The UHS JV girls soccer squad ended its season at home against Downingtown West on Thursday evening.  Despite inspired play from all athletes, including game MVP Erin O'Leary and her defensive counterpart Hannah Firment, the team walked off the pitch with a 0-1 loss.  Thanks to the leadership of co-captains Claire Matson and Hadley McKnight, the team finished with a winning record of 8-5-2.  While this is certainly an accomplishment, the greatest achievement of the season is undoubtedly the overall improvement of each player, proof that the UHS soccer program can look forward to continued success in the future.

10/20 UHS Varsity Soccer

Unionville 1, Downingtown West 0

Unionville (11-4-2) took a  5 game win streak in against Downingtown West (12-2-2).  The game was decided by one goal.  Senior, Salem Carlow, remained hot by scoring a direct kick with 7:00 minutes to go in the first half.  The fearsome foursome of (Sophie Shenk, Erin Garvey, Lyndsay Hastings, Lyndsay Barrett) kept the strong D-town West offense from seeing the back of the net.  Goalie, Katie Borlie, had to work for this one with 11 saves.  That one goal by Carlow was all that was needed for Unionville to extend their win streak.

This is the third top 10 team in District One that Unionville has beaten in the 2016 season.  One more game left tomorrow versus Octorara at 3:15 before heading to Districts..  This game is at the UHS Bus Garage.  All are welcomed to cheer them on to extend this win streak!

10.15 JV girls soccer

The JV girls soccer team finished out their week of play with another win, this time over Strath Haven by a score of 2-1.  The team took the field with the confidence of seasoned veterans despite low numbers and chilly weather.  Paige Harlan would once again prove invaluable in goal, but game MVP Mikaela Stolzus would be the heart of the win on Saturday.  Her work in the midfield cemented the Indians' dominance as she distributed passes to continue to offensive attacks.  Once again, goals were scored because of hustle.  Jenny Keglovits directed a perfect pass across the box to captain Claire Matson who placed a perfect shot by the keeper.  A pass from Mel Landry allowed Julia Capperella to send in a lofting cross behind the keeper that, to the surprise of many, ended up being a goal.  The team heads into the last week of the season with two home games.

10/15 Women's Soccer Update

Women’s Soccer:

Unionville 3, Strath Haven 2

Unionville women's soccer upset # 7 ranked Strath Haven on Saturday afternoon.  It got crazy early as Strath Haven's Crain opened the scoring with a blast from the wing.  Unionville countered quickly with a clutch chip shot from Sam Ciccarelli.  The teams entered halftime with the score knotted at 1-1.

The second half brought more action with Veronica Hineman scoring with a left footed shot from up top.   Not to be outdone, Strath Haven continued to fight with Crane scoring her second goal midway into the second half.

Unionville didn't take their foot off this gas pedal as senior, Salem Carlow, bombed her own left footed shot to give them the lead.  The defense was strong in the middle as they kept the high scoring Strath Haven team out of the box.  Unionville walked away with a hard earned 3-2 win.

The women’s soccer team looks to build on their 4 game win streak with 3 home games this week.  They take on Avon Grove (Monday) at 3:15 at the bus garage.  Downingtown West comes to UHS stadium on Thursday night with a  7:30 game.  They end the regular season on Friday with Octorara at 3:15 at the Bus Garage.  All are encouraged to cheer the UHS soccer team on.

10/13 Varsity Soccer

In a long & hard match, Unionville pulled out a victory over West Chester East.  The teams battled to a tie at half, 0-0, with momentum going back & forth.  With 10 minutes left in the game, Erin Garvey chipped a ball to Salem Carlow.  Carlow then turned & delivered a pass to Elle White who struck a difficult shot in the back of the net.

The defensive took control and kept West Chester East at bay for the rest of the game.  Katie Borlie recorded her fifth shutout of the season.  This win brings Unionville’s record to 8-4-2.  The next game is set for 10:00 at Strath Haven on Saturday.

10.13 JV girls soccer

The JV girls soccer team is 2-0 for the week after a win on Thursday evening over West Chester East.  Both teams played a strong, physical match, but the Indians would find the back of the net twice in the first half and that's all they would need for the win.  The first goal started from the defensive zone when Hannah Firment cleared a long ball from the back to Mel Landry, who fought through the defense to a breakaway on goal.  Minutes later, an East defender would literally pass the ball straight to Makayla Bucci who, after working through the shock, turned to goal for the second tally.  Payton Jaenisch and game MVP Julia Caperella helped to control the midfield, while Abbie Hug secured the goal so the team could walk away with the shut out.

10.11 JV girls soccer

While you were lounging around on your day off, the JV girls soccer team was on fire under the lights against Coatesville on Tuesday evening.  Sofia Kolliopoulos set the tone for the rest of the night when she started the scoring with a convincing shot off of a Mel Landry assist.  The half would end at 1-0, but the Indians came out looking to play their brand of soccer.  Within the first ten minutes of the second half, Liz Capperella would attack the endline and send a ball across the middle to Syd Stipa for another goal.  Kolliopoulus would add a second tally with an assist from Jenny Keglovits, and then Keglovits would turn around and score herself and before assisting again on a goal from Erin Mazur.  Lindsey Barrett finished the scoring with an assist from Mazur.  The team ended may have ended the game with a 6-0 win, but they also showed great sportsmanship during the match.

JV volleyball vs. Downingtown East

Good Morning,

Here are the scores from last night's match vs. Downingtown East.

Set 1: 22-25 DEast
Set 2: 25-19 Unionville
    Set 3: 13-15 DEast

The JV girls volleyball team lost a very close match to Downingtown East yesterday.  Set scores were 22-25, 25-19 and 13-15.  The whole game was a nail biter with long rallies and a close score the entire match.  The middles, Lauren Stokes and Kay Tuerff lead the way putting up big blocks and getting lots of kills.  Outside hitters Analise Griffiths and Sisi Snavely made some excellent plays against Downingtown's 6' 6" middle hitter.  Morgan Canino and Taylor Lindsay dug up countless hits to give us the opportunity to run our offense.  Last but not least, Emma Daly ran the offense with confidence giving our hitters perfect sets almost every time. Although the match is not a win in the books, it is a win in our hearts.  Definitely one we will remember.

Thank you,
Stephanie

Unionville Women's Soccer: Unionville 2, Downingtown East 1

Unionville played back to back games with another tough opponent in Downingtown East (#8 team in District One) on the schedule Wednesday.  Downingtown East got on the board 10 minutes into the giving them a 1-0 lead.  The momentum was clearly in Downingtown’s favor, but a direct kick by Alexxa Conroy was popped in by Sophia Detweiler to enter the half giving Unionville 1-1 tie.

The second half went back & forth until Unionville got a perfectly placed corner kick from Salem Carlow that was directed in by Detweiler to score her second goal of the night.  Unionville took control with the 2-1 lead with 15 minutes to play.   This tough match went down to the final moments with Unionville walking away with a hard fought victory.  The Unionville defense was led by goalie, Katie Borlie (4 saves) along with Lyndsay Hastings & Sophie Schenk.

JV girls soccer 10.4 and 10.5

The JV girls soccer team opened up the week with double header action against two of the toughest opponents in Southern Chester County.  On Tuesday, the team played a strong Conestoga squad to a 0-0 tie.  Thanks in large part to the completely selfless play of goalie Paige Harlan and the technically efficient control of game MVP Payton Jaenisch in the midfield, the Indians were able to stave off 'Stoga pressure.

Without much time to recover from such taxing play, the girls stepped onto the pitch on Wednesday evening to face Downingtown East.  Goalie efforts were equally amazing this game with a stunning penalty kick save from Abbie Hug early in the first.  The visitors would go up by a goal at halftime and they would strike again in the second half, but the Indians would not back down.  Thanks to persistent efforts from Julia Capperella and Erin O'Leary, Claire Matson was able to knock a shot by the keeper to end the game 1-2.  The team looks move to the other side of the win column in game competition next week...Go U!
